yad-eveha tad-amutra yad-amutra tad-anviha,
måtyoù sa måtyum-äpnoti ya iha näneva paçyati. (10)
This is a very beautiful and well-known mantra. Verily, that
which is here is there as well – yad-eva iha tad-amutra. And
whatever is there is certainly here too – yad-amutra tad-anviha. One
who seems to see many things here goes from death to death –
måtyoù sa måtyum-äpnoti ya iha näneva paçyati. Generally, we
say from birth to death. But here, it is said from death to death,
meaning he dies, then is born again and dies again. It goes on
and on. Bhagavan Sankaracharya explains that ‘what is here’
refers to that pure Consciousness (çuddha caitanya) which expresses
through our individual upädhis – the body, mind, senses, and
intellect. And what is here is there also, meaning where the
upädhis are not there – there, caitanya is in its pure form, without
any conditionings. So, what appears here as conditioned appears
there without any conditioning. And that which is there in its
pure form – that alone is here also.
