Where Wisdom Walks with Compassion

wami Tapovanji Maharaj was a true Brahma Jïäné – a
SRealized Sage, revered by Swami Sivananda as the “Crest
Gem among Mahatmas.” He embodied Vedanta, not only in
                                 1
knowledge and discipline, but in compassion and simplicity.
Pujya Gurudev describes how an acharya from Benares
would engage him in subtle discussions of Vedic implications –
their Sanskrit dialogue sparkling with logic and insight. But if, at
that very moment, an old village woman from Rajasthan trudged
up, Tapovanji would instantly descend from the rarefied heights
of metaphysics and ask about her family, reassuring her that a
single dip in Mother Ganga at Gangotri would wash away all
her sins. “This capacity to sing in all tunes and in all notes is
unavoidable in a great Teacher occupying the place of reverence
and glory as he was. It took years for others around him to
understand the necessity for such an agile mind and intellect in a
        Teacher.”
                2
Swami Tapovanji Maharaj’s classic Guidance from the Guru
is a collection of letters written to a devotee couple. Each page
of spiritual guidance to householders reflects the depth of his
insight as well as tenderness of heart. For him, Vedanta was not
a subject to be discussed but a Truth to be lived. His compassion
stemmed from his Realization. Whether speaking to a learned
scholar or to a weary traveler, he saw the same Self in all.
How fortunate are we to see this effortless movement – from
the heights of Vedantic discussion to the tender language of
human care – shining through in Pujya Gurudev and our
beautiful Guru Parampara! May Swami Tapovanji’s life continue
to inspire us to blend depth with humility, and knowledge
with kindness. Our koöi-koöi praëäms and profound
        gratitude to this towering Master.
