       SWAMI TEJOMAYANANDA
             e now begin the last section of this  Upanishad. Yamaräjä
       Wtells Nachiketa: Look here! I am going to show you a tree.
       Nachiketa wondered at this. A tree? So far, Yamaräjä had been
       speaking only about  ätmä and  Brahman. The following mantra
       explains what that tree is.

             tdev zu³< tÓ+ü tdevam&tmuCyte,
             tiSm~‘aeka> iïta> sveR tÊ naTyeit kín,
             @tÖE tt!. 1.
             ürdhva-mülo’väkçäkha eño›çvatthaù sanätanaù,
             tad-eva çukraà tad-brahma tad-evämåtam-ucyate,
             tasmiðllokäù çritäù sarve tadu nätyeti kaçcana,
             etadvai tat. (1)
       See this (eñaù) açvattha (peepal/banyan) tree. The speciality of this
       tree is that it is urdhva-mülaù – its root is above, and the branches
                                         No  education  is a waste, no  bit
                                         of  knowledge redundant,  no
                                         experience  superfluous;  all  can
                                         be intelligently made to serve us
                                         in our pilgrimage to the Truth.
