“Don’t worry, you’ll be alright.” The child looks at you but
continues to cry. Do you know why? She does not trust you. A few
moments later, her mother arrives and says the very same words.
Instantly, the child stops crying and smiles. Why? Because she
trusts her mother.
Similarly, even the best spiritual practice will not yield its
result if we do not have faith in the means. The purpose of the
incarnation of God, in all religions, was to establish this trust –
trust in God and thereby to affirm the existence of God. Every
saint and every messenger of God who came to this world to
speak to people did so for one essential reason: to establish faith
in human hearts, trust in the scriptures, and confidence in the
words of the wise.
Take any American dollar – one, five, ten, or twenty. What
is written on it? In God we trust. In the Indian subcontinent,
the national motto declares satyameva jayate – Truth alone triumphs.
That which is worshipped as God in religion is regarded as
Truth by the philosopher. Both are timeless and changeless.
They are the same reality, seen from two different standpoints.
For a devotee of God, faith is indispensable. For one who
follows the path of philosophy, that very God is understood as
Truth – That which remains the same in all three periods of
time. We need not build a personal relationship with Truth, but
we must have an unshakable conviction that Truth is, and an
equal faith in the pramäëa, the means by which that Truth is
known or realized.
