The Divine Gardener

garden in bloom is a delightful sight. Every flower, every
A leaf, and every fragrance bears the touch of the gardener’s
loving care. So, it is with the Guru. Pujya Gurudev beautifully
explained: “No gardener can make even one flower. The flower
must come from the plant... The gardener can shake up the roots a
little, feed them properly, water them, protect them from animals
…. In the same way, the textbooks, the masters, and the rishis are
all gardeners. The flower of Knowledge must come from you. In
the light of Knowledge, all doubts end.” The Guru awakens the
                                               1
highest possibilities within us. He prepares the soil of our hearts,
waters with scriptural knowledge, uproots the weeds of ego, and
        nourishes us with love.
Pujya Gurudev embodied this vision. During a jïäna yajïa
in Belgaum, after lunch each day, he would wash his hands
beside a tiny jasmine plant and gently whisper, “Grow, little one,
grow.” By the end of the yajïa, the plant had put forth a dozen
glossy new leaves. Perhaps he was speaking – not only to the
                          2
        jasmine!
Though he is no longer physically with us, Pujya Gurudev has
never ceased tending to the vast garden of the Chinmaya family.
Through his teachings, through the guru-paramparä, through each
and every activity of the Mission, his loving presence continues
        to inspire millions of hearts.
Let us close our eyes. In silence, listen to his gentle whisper:
“Grow, little one, grow.” Rooted in sädhanä, nourished by sevä, and
illumined by Knowledge, may we grow and blossom, spreading
the fragrance of love and joy wherever we are. For our Divine
Gardener has never left us; his infinite grace continues to guide
and bless us – moment by moment.
