The disciple Nachiketas, the Guru Yama, and the sublime
exposition on Brahman stood out vividly by the power of Gurudev’s
words. It was awesome!
But unlike Vivekachudamani, there was little talk of nididhyäsana
(meditation) or samädhi (absorption). Instead, the focus was on
Nachiketas’s dispassion and purity and the crystal-clear wisdom
he gained because of his mental preparation and inner disposition.
The importance of samädhi and its practice were not emphasized.
The difference was palpable, and I was perplexed.
Is Meditation Mandatory?
There arose a chance to get it clarified – the Q&A session at the
end of the camp. There were many questions, but Gurudev did
not answer all of them because many of the submitted questions
did not carry the names as per Gurudev’s instructions. Gurudev
just tore such papers with questions and no names, remarking,
“What teaching is possible if even such simple instructions from
the Guru are not followed?”
Nevertheless, even after his utmost effort to answer the
questions within the stipulated time, a few remained unanswered,
and for these, Gurudev promised to send the replies by post.
Now, it became amply clear why Gurudev had insisted that we
pen our names along with the question. He was a conscientious
Teacher for whom the clarity of his students mattered. But
just when the Q&A session was about to end, Gurudev took up
one last one, which was mine: Is meditation a must for
Self-realization?
