To affirm the availability of the final thoughtless experience to
all, regardless of creed or culture, Gurudev would often express
the sacred experience of the nirvikalpa-samädhi as ‘Beatitude’,
borrowing the well-known Biblical expression.
What does the expression ‘white heat’ in the context of
meditation mean? What is the last thought? How and why does
it end? What purpose does thoughtlessness serve? What is
meant by the mystic death of the ego? What is the exact nature
and experience of that sacred vision of Reality? These are
some questions that we will take up for our contemplation based
on the expositions of Pujya Gurudev.
The Steps
By ‘listening’ (çravaëa) to the Guru’s teaching of Vedanta,
one becomes aware that one’s true nature is pure
Existence–Consciousness–Bliss (sat–cit–änanda), that is Brahman, and
that one is not the body-mind–intellect (BMI) complex, and that
the sense of one being the perceiver–feeler–thinker ego (PFT) is
not a fact. The seeker, thereafter, progresses to the next stage of
logical reflection (manana) on what has been grasped but not
fully comprehended. In this state of ‘reflection’, one intellectually
understands the truth of the teaching and becomes convinced
that one’s real nature is indeed Brahman.
Even after this intellectual comprehension of being pure
Existence–Consciousness–Bliss, the habitual contrary notions
(viparéta bhävanä) of being the BMI complex, the
perceiver–feeler–thinker ego (PFT) that is attended with the notions
of being the doer (kartä) and the enjoyer (bhoktä), continue to persist.
