Bhu Devi: Sacred Mother, Our Sacred Trust
n our tradition, Bhu Devi is revered as the Divine Mother who
Isustains all forms of life. As the consort of Lord Vishnu, She
represents our planet that is upheld and protected. The well-known
episode of Varaha Avatar, in which Lord Vishnu rescues Her
from the depths of the Cosmic Ocean, carries a compelling
message for our times: when Mother Earth is threatened, it is
our duty to look after Her.
The Ishavasya Upanishad declares that the entire universe
is pervaded by the Lord. Such a vision leaves little room for
careless exploitation. Rivers, forests, animals, and mountains are
not merely resources for human use, but belong to the sacred
order of creation.
This appreciation is expressed in the traditional Bhümi Prärthanä
– samudravasane devi… pädasparçaà kñamasvame – recited before
placing one’s feet upon Mother Earth, seeking forgiveness for
touching Her. More than a beautiful prayer, it reminds us that
even the most ordinary acts of daily life call us to responsibility.
Such veneration is a crucial part of environmental
education. Our Chinmaya Vidyalayas encourage children to
touch the soil, plant seeds, care for trees, conserve water, and
observe birds and animals. These experiences, coupled with an
understanding of climate change and conservation, help nurture
both knowledge and respect. Yet the burden cannot rest upon
children alone. We cannot ask them to protect the Earth while we
continue to consume without restraint.
May this Bhümi Prärthanä live forever in our hearts and mould
the way we live. May we behold Bhu Devi always
as our sacred Mother, and honour Her with
reverence, humility, gratitude, and care. May our
thoughts and actions become offerings to Her. Editorial
May we leave behind a world of beauty and
abundance for the generations to follow.
