Enroute, they had to cross a river by swimming. When they
reached the other shore, one of the students thought of counting
to confirm whether all have reached safely. He had the students
stand in a single line and began counting. To his dismay, he
could see only nine students. So they concluded that the tenth
man had drowned and started crying. An elderly person asked
them why they were crying. On knowing the reason, he smiled and
assured them, “Don’t worry! The tenth man is there – daçamo’asti.”
He made them all stand in a line and started counting. He
counted the nine, then approached the last student and said to
him, “tvaà daçamo’si.” The moment he heard this, the knowledge
of the tenth was gained: ahaà daçamo’smi – I am that tenth man.
