Bhakti: Love that
Liberates – 1
SWAMI TEJOMAYANANDA
evotion is of the nature of love. Without love, life would
Dbe utterly joyless. Surely, it is impossible to remain steadfast
in karma, meditation, our profession, yoga exercises, or anything
else – unless we have adequate love for it.
Intellectually, we may know many things, but it is only when
knowledge is supported by positive feelings that it results in
concrete action. Often, we hear the expression, “My heart was not
in it.” For instance, we know we should respect and serve our
parents, but we will do so only when we have genuine feelings
and concern for them. Conversely, if we are passionate about
something, we will act – even when intellectual support and
analysis may be lacking.
If we love the work we do, it gives us immense joy and
satisfaction. If we do it for someone we love and are devoted to,
we gain even greater joy. However, if we dislike that person, the
very same work becomes a source of unhappiness and agitation.
Truly, love alone wins.

Times and People’ in New Delhi, October 2016.
